Understanding Acute Kidney Injury (AKI)
Acute Kidney Injury (AKI), formerly known as acute renal failure, is a rapid and sudden decline in kidney function occurring over hours or days. AKI leads to the accumulation of metabolic waste products, electrolyte imbalances, and fluid overload. It is a medical emergency that requires immediate expert attention.
Dr. Priyash Tambi, we perform rapid diagnostics to identify the underlying cause of AKI (whether prerenal, intrinsic renal, or postrenal obstruction) and start immediate treatment to protect the kidney tissue and promote healing.
Common Symptoms & Indications of AKI:
- Significantly decreased urine output (oliguria or anuria)
- Severe fluid retention causing swelling (edema) in legs, ankles, and feet
- Shortness of breath due to fluid accumulation in the lungs
- Fatigue, confusion, drowsiness, and generalized weakness
- Nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite
- Chest pain or pressure in severe cases
Advanced AKI Management
Our specialized treatment includes intravenous fluid balancing, medication adjustments to prevent drug-induced toxicity, management of electrolyte levels (such as potassium and sodium), and temporary hemodialysis or continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) in the ICU for severe cases until kidneys recover.
